Translating the Qualitative into the Quantitative

In a world where so much has "gone digital," and so many leaders are asking, "What are the numbers on...?", it is now more necessary than ever to responsibly bridge the gap between the Qualitative and Quantitative worlds, thus allowing such challenging situations to be viewed, understood, and thus treated, in their entirety.

Sometimes it is necessary to "translate" a primarily Qualitative environment (e.g., customer impact, or the demand that can prudently be placed on a bar server) in order to bridge the gap between the Qualitative and Quantitative worlds, thus providing a way to more fairly compare alternatives, or to more accurately compare "apples" to "oranges."

We can create methods to wrestle seemingly unquantifiable conditions to the ground, so they can be understood and thus more effectively addressed.

We can design a method to fairly and responsibly create metrics for any environment.

Revenue vs. Space Analysis
Revenue vs. Space Analysis - Cruise Ship Bars, Casino & Retail Stores

Studied/determined the potential revenue implications of proposed square-meter-area reductions in the environments of bar, casino, and retail stores in a new “compact” cruise ship design.  Also, identified/advised on opportunities to more effectively/fully utilize the planned spaces.

The extensive field study determined the revenue implications, and in addition:

  • Determined the ideal number of bar venues, the total number of required seats in various bars, and influenced the venue layout and seating-group design directions.

  • Guided the architects with a new overall, more efficient casino layout strategy (ideal spacing between slot machines, optimum layout configurations, implications of using “multiple game, server-based” slot machines, and tailoring gaming table size/capacity selections).

  • Influenced the amount of retail store space allocated, the location of retail stores on the ship, and the interior layouts of the given retail stores.

Efficiencies vs. Cuts - Calculation System

Developed a method to fairly compare various “efficiency” (cost reducing/revenue generating) proposals involving both Quantitative (e.g., $278,000 savings) and Qualitative (e.g., removing the printed brand logo from cocktail napkins) implications.

Created an algorithm/system to produce a score based on the considerations of the proposals’ overall financial implication (positive or negative, Quantitative value) and the likely “impact” (positive or negative, Qualitative value) on customers or other stakeholders.

Executives then used these scores to quickly, efficiently, and fairly identify the “most beneficial” proposals during managerial/strategic decision-making sessions.

Square Meter & Gross Tonnage Forecasting /
Tracking Tool

Created a tool that captures, tracks, and forecasts the space allocations (for use during ship design) for all areas/functions on a cruise ship.

The tool identifies “over building” and waste, potential “underbuilding,” and isolates opportunities for improved space utilization in both the general and technical areas of the cruise ship design.

Results guided key decisions regarding space allocation/utilization ratios (both public and crew areas).

Smart Bar Manager

Studied an existing “bar service delivery” model for a major cruise line.  Reengineered processes and designed software to:

  • Remove the “wasted time” from the Bartenders’ and Bar Servers’ “scheduled time”

  • Schedule only the minimum required number of staff during all volume levels of operation

  • Ensure all staff are “working” and “contributing” during the scheduled time periods

  • Eliminate “walking” time (and associated wasted time) where possible

  • Cover more “real estate” with less Bar Servers

Increased revenue and improved guest service by ensuring:

  • More immediate “approach” by a Bar Server

  • Decreased “order-to-delivery” time

  • More timely offering of "another round" of drinks

  • More efficient clearing/cleaning of vacated tables

Created an environment in which “teamwork” and “healthy competition” are the natural drivers to produce more results, faster.

$1.1 Billion Financial Damages PowerPoint Presentation - Fortune 500 Company

Translated the Chairman’s/CEO’s vision into a PowerPoint presentation to be used in a jury trial for a $1.1B  financial damages lawsuit.

A fully custom approach was required, including the generation of a family of case-specific graphics and simplified operating and financial models to ensure jurors' understanding.

The CEO loved the approach and the presentation...and they won the case.

Architectural Fees Calculator

Created a tool to quickly and efficiently calculate the architectural fees, by design/work phase and personnel type, associated with varying project and client types.

The tool reduced the client’s initial “bidding time” from hours to just a few minutes.

While the client initially doubted the possibility of creating an accurate calculating model, answering “It just depends!” to virtually every interview question...we just kept asking, “Depends on what, exactly?”
